Gorilla Foundation rocked by lawsuit

Two former employees of the Gorilla Foundation, home to Koko the "talking" ape, have filed a lawsuit contending that they were ordered to bond with the 33-year-old female simian....

This is truly one of the strangest stories I have read in a long time. Who would have ever thought of Koko having a fetish such as the one mentioned? It's very sad, as this is bound to have an incredible impact on the credibility of the research coming out of this project.

This isn't about bestiality, or sexual coercion. Animals have a frank interest in body parts, smells, etc, and different social mores than we do. They bond, they groom, they hang out, they greet each other differently than we do. If these women weren't comfortable with hanging out with Koko and going along with her eccentricities, they did not belong working with her and Penny Patterson. But filing a million dollar law suit over this -- it's like getting offended because you're told that when the gorilla blows in your face to get a scent you should hold still or blow back. It would be idiotic to file a suit over something like that, calling it traumatizing or harassment -- and this is an equally frivolous suit. And the Gorilla Foundation is not some rich Hollywood starlet to be soaked in a law suit. Their work is necessary and important, their funds limited -- and this is just a shame.
